Nothing makes a costume more realistic than proper make up. Some of the hottest costumes this year require authentic character make up whereas others you only need to know the basics.

Costumes that require a little professional make up or just a few accessories.  Special thanks to  petrilude who has the most amazing talent for re creating the hottest characters for Halloween. :

Madd Hatter make up

For the Madd Hatter you need basic white make up, red lips, a little blue eye shadow and some orange shadow to tint your eyebrows to the color of the wig.  Makeup application scale this is only a 3 out of 10.

For Alice in Wonderland it is pretty simple.  Just wear regular makeup but add some great sparkling eyelashes to complete your costume.  These eyelashes could be used for a variety of costumes including Cleopatra.  Makeup application scale this is only a 2 out of 10.

Avatar makeup:  I have included a Youtube video below, but again for women this costume you can use a lot of vampy type make up unless you want to go all BLUE.   For sensitive skin I would not go this route. There is an Avatar mens costume that does include a mask which for the character Sully might be the way to go. New for 2010 you can buy an Avatar wig.   The image here shows good use of make up and the wig to make the character more realistic.  Makeup application scale this is an 8 out of 10.

Dark Knight – the Joker – was an excellent movie and the costume is still hot for 2010.  Anything to do with the Joker and Batman movies. There is a lot of white, black and red make up. Lady Gaga inspired costume and makeup This look is inspired by the Pokerface video.   has many looks and I am sure over the years it will be imitated by many at Halloween or any fancy dress parties that are actor or musician themes.  Lady Gaga costumes will be big this year. If you are interested in buying the Lady Gaga costume, it includes Long, elegant black gloves, a platinum blonde long wig, stylin’ sunglasses and thick black eyelashes.  All you will need is shoes a unitard and stockings which you can purchase at dance stores.

Flapper Girl Costume – this is a very popular costume.  Many celebrities have been spotted wearing the flapper costume.  Make up is very 20′s, bright red lipstick, and a focus on the eyes as seen in this image.  Makeup application scale this is only a 2 out of 10.

If you look back to photos of Egyptians you will see that most of the world’s first cosmetics were made from minerals such as copper and lead.  Of course we would never use these kinds of product now due to their toxicity.  Today our makeup is more of a scientifically engineered product and many of them talk about how they can take years off of your face.  Make up has now been an integral part of a womens and a mans life both in theatre, t.v., movies and for parties including Halloween, New Years, and Mardi Gras.

Although very much commonplace these days,  in Victorian England around the 19th century, the use of makeup or cosmetics was frowned upon. Only stage actors were seen to use make up and cosmetics as it was considered to be far too vulgar for the more upper class society.

It was only after the end of the Second World War and the return of an economic boom did we see an enormous growth in the makeup and cosmetic industries.  It was also when television emerged as the new technology and paid ads became common place.  Newspapers started to show an abundant amount of ads for lipsticks, foundations and mascaras.   The 60′s and 70′s brought in a new era of make up icons such as Twiggy with her long eyelashes and waif like look which was copied by millions.

Today, make up and cosmetics are a multibillion dollar industry and must past very strict Government regulations.  Even with these guidelines in place, it is important to test make up on small areas before putting your face as it can cause irritation and rashes.
